The selection panel ensures transparency in the selection process, evaluates the nominations and recommends who may receive the awards.
Each panel member represents a different perspective. The panellists are:
- A parent
- A principal
- A student
- A support staff member
- A teacher
- An early childhood educator
A seventh member acts as the chair to help the panel reach consensus and ensure that everyone is involved in the selection process. The selection panel chair for the 2011-12 Premier's Awards for Teaching Excellence is Brandie Weikle.
 Brandie Weikle is the parenting and relationships editor for the Toronto Star and the editor of the Star's parenting website, parentcentral.ca. She has been writing, editing and commenting on subjects relating to parenting since first joining Today's Parent magazine 12 years ago. Education was one of the areas of interest that drew her to the field even before she had children of her own. As senior editor, Brandie helped relaunch Canadian Family magazine, before joining the Star four years ago as founding editor of parentcentral and the Star's health website, healthzone.ca. She's the mother of two boys, eight and four years old.
