Ken Bartlett has always put students first, consistently developing innovative ways to engage them and integrate the research life of the university into their academic experience. Recognizing some of the challenges of learning in a large urban university, he recommended the development of smaller classes for first year students to provide an opportunity for greater interaction, to develop communication and social skills, and to get to know a professor.

Robert Campbell's ability to reach out and teach every student individually no matter the class size makes his classes sought after. Using his intelligent sense of humour, energy and passion, Campbell projects a confidence in his students that makes them determined to do well in his classes. His teaching methods help students be comfortable discussing difficult subjects and to understand and appreciate cultural diversity. His methods include the use of an interactive website that allows students to learn about religion in the everyday lives of practitioners.

His innovations include creating the Biome online community, which connects over 4,500 life science students with each other, with faculty, and with campus resources and opportunities and the First Year Learning Communities program that helps entering students develop the skills they need to be successful at university.

Drawing regularly on the Cherokees' traditional commitments to community education and cultural exchange, he strives to enrich the university experience of both Aboriginal and non-Native students and builds a bridge between Aboriginal and European-based worlds of knowledge.

Judith Poë

Judith Poë is a gifted teacher who communicates the excitement and intellectual rigor of her subject to her students. As an innovator in instructional technology, she has created a system of "virtual office hours", which allows students to ask both public and confidential questions outside of normal office hours and allows all students to view all of the publicly posted questions and their answers. Judith Poë also serves as a role model and mentor for her female students who are in a field that has traditionally been dominated by men.
