Open Letter to Ontario Teachers in Publicly Funded Education regarding the status of the Professional Learning ProgramMay 13, 2004
On December 18, I wrote you to confirm that our government was planning to introduce legislation to repeal the divisive Professional Learning Program. Earlier today, I introduced the Professional Learning Program Cancellation Act, 2004 and it passed first reading. If approved by the Legislature, the Act would amend the Ontario College of Teachers' Act to remove the requirement that teachers complete 14 courses in prescribed categories every five years to maintain their Ontario teaching certificate. I also want to take this opportunity to ensure you are aware that on May 5, 2004, Premier McGuinty announced the Premier's Awards for Teaching Excellence. The 14 awards will celebrate the work done by Ontario's teachers as well as principals, vice-principals and education support workers and recognize their roles in unlocking our young people's potential. Nomination forms will be available on our website shortly. Our government has a policy of respect for teachers and is committed to recognizing them as professionals. A discussion paper outlining our approach to teacher excellence will be available shortly. Your feedback is welcome and appreciated. Let me take this opportunity to express my thanks for the work you are doing on behalf of Ontario's children and youth. I look forward to working with you to bring excellence to all students
in this province. Sincerely, Gerard Kennedy Related Information
