The Focus on Youth (FOY) Summer Program offers young people summer job experience and summer activities for children. By extending learning beyond the classroom, students are engaged year-round in safe and supportive environments. The program is open to all children and young people in selected inner city and other urban neighbourhoods, with a focus on engaging at-risk children and youth.
Through the program, approximately 8,000 young people have been employed and more than 145,000 children and youth have enjoyed summer activities since 2007.
As part of the enhanced Ontario’s Youth Action Plan, the government has invested an additional $1 million to expand the program in Brantford, Kingston, Peterborough, Sudbury and Thunder Bay in the 2015-16 school year. And it is supporting in-year after school programs in existing communities in the 2015-16 school year.
In summer 2014, the total investment was $7 million, allowing more than 1,800 young people to benefit from summer job experience and approximately 28,000 to enjoy summer activities. The Focus on Youth summer program aligns with the government's new strategic framework for youth, Stepping Up: A Strategic Framework to Help Ontario's Youth Succeed.
