To Achieve Excellence

(Read in unison)
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

To achieve excellence
We first need relevance
And elevated status
To shift into drive
And initiate our strive
For knowledge and success
And when we can access
Knowledge that we want to know
We can plug into our yearning FOR learning
To be taught something we can use
In the real world.

(Read in unison)
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

Because success shouldn't stop
When we cross the threshold
Into the classroom
It should grow, bloom
And stay with us long through our lives.
See excellence
Is not defined or refined
By a number on a page
In a world of 7 billion
Do not rate me on scale of
One to one-hundred
Success cannot exist
On a linear plain.

Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

I am not John or a Jane Doe.
I am student number 7-3-9-1-0
Oh what you said
When I told you I have dreams
Because my math marks
Were only in the teens
Like the teens that you teach
How to read, write and add
Will need more skills
When they're moms
And dads
Like communication
Time management
And how to raise a baby
So please I'm begging you…
Teach me!

(Read in unison)
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

For I am me
And will be
Who I want to be
In this community
I am because we are
It's not about being
It's about well being
Because we are all human beings
We aim to achieve excellence
Yet we should strive to excel
Do not tell me I can't accelerate
Past my own boundaries.

Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

I speak for students isolated by society
I lived through discrimination and bullying that brought isolation
Happily, I found people in my community who supported me
I am a Crown ward student and I deserve respect.

CCME?
See, see, I'm me!
Individualized like my learning should be
The system taught us each as a blank canvas
And we've been promptly painted
By the prominence
Of our learning
And here we are scribbling on new pages
Being heard, my dream
Time to learn that your answers are under your nose
And we know what you don't
We LIVE, BREATHE, SLEEP Education
It's our specialty
Recipe for success?
One part redefinition, two parts confidence,
mix well and watch us rise!

Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

Don't tell me that it's too late
Don't tell me I've missed out
I am an adult
I am a student
And I have just as much chance as any other
I have a bright future and I want an education
I am no different from you.

(Read in unison)
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

I'm bound to this factory
Which marks my value
Based on a data manufacturer
But students are not products,
We are the living, we are the now, we are the future.
Our potential will not be snuffed,
We have dreams, and they ARE enough.

Let's do this together, ain't no way better

Affected by intergenerational pain
I escaped residential schools
Whitened, raped, killed and starved, my ancestors were not protected
Even if my school is different, militarism does not further my cause
A morning cry, a federal religion are no solution to a culture still in pain
The least we can ask is for our culture to be respected.

From what I hear today, students are seen from raw data,
We are given excuses for problems,
like “kids will be kids” or “you're not the school type”
in a world of post secondary hype,
I wish I wasn't told only platitudes – no original advice in sight…
I want to see action in the face of words!
In a world where we are reactionary, how outrage comes before intervention,
We want more than public assumption, we want public attention
We want people to see that education, seems to be the key to the problems,
Problems buried in tea-time discussions that are subtle and deep, until they seep
Like the infected wounds they are
We need to stand together no matter how young and old we are
We want parental reception not some intellectual detention
We want a dialogue beyond what we want for a job
We need students to be seen as more than slow down zones,
learning drones going down set roads.
We need to be seen as people that have been more than sponges
We want respect, we want conscious public confidence.

Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better
Let's do this together, ain't no way better

And with this common goal in mind
We will find
A way to synergize
With teachers, students
And admin alike
We are a communal army
Fighting to find
A schooling system where every student
Can succeed in their own right
And if we slowly and gradually
Begin to change
Our education, Our nation,
Will turn a new page
And begin the next chapter
Towards: Public Confidence… Equity… Well-being… and Excellence.
