Adriana Del Zotto, Grade 3 teacher: (to students) What else about a planet? What do we know about our planet?

Adriana Del Zotto: (to camera) I’m the Grade 3 teacher at St. John the Evangelist. The first year that I was teaching, the students scored quite high. Second year that I was teaching, the marks did drop. After that, the board came in and designated our school an OFIP school.

Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Education: OFIP is the Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership Program and what it does is it provides resources to schools that may be struggling for one reason or another, to help them to boost their student achievement.

Sonja Raka, Grade 3 student: When I come to school, I learn at least three new things every single day which makes me smarter and happier because I like learning a lot.

Roy Fernandes, principal: OFIP’s been to our school I believe for the last two years. And it was a real valuable opportunity for staff just to get that in-servicing from ministry experts. So our thought is by giving students all these different opportunities, it gives everyone a chance to succeed at something.

Kathleen Wynne: What St. John the Evangelist demonstrates is that challenges can be overcome, that demographics and those challenges don’t determine where student achievement will land. And with the right supports, all students can achieve; all schools can improve.

Adriana Del Zotto: Our results have improved over the years. And they’re continuing to improve. So I think it’s been a really, really great success.
