Subject: College Strike

Good afternoon,

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents full-time professors, instructors, counsellors and librarians within Ontario’s publicly-funded college system, has begun a strike action as of Monday, October 16, 2017.

This action may negatively impact students who participate in a number of secondary programs, events, and activities that take place, entirely or in part, on college campuses or utilizing college resources. This includes:

  • School College Work Initiative (SCWI) Activities and Dual Credit Programs, most notably the School Within a College (SWAC) programs, which are situated on college campuses.
  • Experiential learning opportunities, such as cooperative education, in which student placements occur on a college campus.
  • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) level 1 Apprenticeship schooling provided at colleges.

Please know that you have the full support of the ministry as your school board teams work through these challenges. A key element during this time includes maintaining solid communication between and among all partners. To the greatest degree possible we want to work with you in order to keep the focus on our students to ensure they have continued access to programming in order to support their achievement.

In order to facilitate communication and continued access to programming, we are working with the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE), which administers SCWI Activities and Dual Credit Programs on behalf of the ministry. These Activities, Dual Credit programs and Level 1 Apprenticeship schooling provided at colleges are those most likely to be impacted by the college strike. CODE is supporting the SCWI Regional Planning Teams to mitigate the impact of the strike on Dual Credit Programs, and will field any questions your school board may have on this issue.

Attached for your information are a set of Questions and Answers that may be helpful in your communications.

If there is anything that we can do to further assist you in your efforts, please don’t hesitate to connect.

Sincerely,

Cathy Montreuil

Denys Giguère
