Labour Next Steps – Update and Local Bargaining

July 23, 2012

On July 9, 2012, I wrote to you regarding the status of the labour discussions and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Government of Ontario and OECTA. In that same communication, which is below, I asked our other education partners to contact representatives from the government table team to arrange meetings to take place within the subsequent 10 days, in the hopes that we could move quickly to finalize additional agreements.

I appreciate that many of you made yourselves available between July 9th and July 20th and every partner who requested a meeting take place during this time period was accommodated. Government representatives answered questions relating to the MOU and discussed options for moving forward.

Some of you have requested additional meetings that would be primarily informational in nature. With September 1 now rapidly approaching, it is essential that any meetings that take place in the next four weeks be undertaken with a real intent to reach a PDT agreement. With that goal in mind, the government team would be pleased to facilitate any meeting between a federation and a trustee group with the intent of reaching a PDT agreement.

It remains the government's position that the OECTA MOU should serve as a roadmap for local bargaining throughout the summer months. As we move quickly towards September, I encourage you to work within the government's fiscal parameters and pursue local bargaining. You will be receiving additional correspondence from officials around these matters in the very near future.

I remain committed to ensuring that Ontario students are in the classroom when school returns in the fall, while ensuring the government's fiscal objectives are met. I know that our shared focus on students, student achievement, and the classroom experience will remain at the heart of ongoing discussions and our collective actions moving forward.
