Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School, Sarnia
Bridges Project
With its school population drawn from a large geographic area, Alexander Mackenzie faced a considerable challenge attracting parents to attend school council meetings. Often, travel time to and from each meeting was greater than the meeting time itself. The solution was the "Bridges Project", which combined school council meetings with a series of informative parent workshops. The program will be expanded during the 2007-2008 school year.
At-a-Glance
- A promotional flyer is developed for parents to describe a series of parent workshops to be held during the school year.
- School council members and other parents are consulted on the selection of topics relevant to parents in the region.
- Flyers are mailed to parents with first semester report cards to ensure high visibility.
- Principals of neighbouring elementary schools are also contacted, and encouraged to invite parents of Grade 8 children to the events.
- Workshops are held in conjunction with school council meetings, and parents are encouraged to attend both the workshop and meeting.
