Tutoring Initiatives

Research shows that additional time and appropriate support can help students learn the skills they need to be successful. This is why the government has dedicated over $22 million to tutoring programs across the province since 2005-06.

Tutors in the Classroom

Over $3 million has been provided to help school boards from 2005-06 to 2007-08 to train and hire more than 3,500 postsecondary students to tutor elementary school students.

Building Literacy Skills Through Tutoring

This initiative is a partnership between Trent University, three district school boards (Kawartha Pine Ridge, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic, and Trillium Lakelands) and the Ministry of Education. Since 2005-06, training has been provided to almost 500 teacher education candidates so taht they can support the work of classroom teachers. As a result, many children reading below grade expectations in grades 2 and 3 in the Peterborough-Muskoka region have increased their reading levels dramatically.

OFIP Tutoring Initiative

The Secretariat has provided an additional $8 million province-wide in 2006-07 and 2007-08 for OFIP (Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership) tutoring initiatives. This will enable boards to initiate or extend programs that assist students beyond their regular day to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills. This investment is in addition to the $25 million in OFIP funding provided in both 2006-07 and 2007-08 to boards and schools to support higher levels of student achievement.
