- Approximate Spelling in the Primary Division: Fostering Written Language Acquisition
By Drs. Carole Fleuret and Jonathan Bolduc
December 2009 (PDF, 844 KB) [Only available in French.]
This monograph explores approximate spelling as a promising tool to help primary students acquire solid spelling skills. The authors present a research summary of the origin of approximate spelling, then propose some educational activities that promote writing skills and the understanding of the alphabetic principle (the link between the spoken and written word). The main objective of these practices is to encourage the student to take risks and reinvest the knowledge he or she has acquired by engaging in new linguistic experiences. Since linguistic skills develop throughout an individual's lifetime, the authors recommend that approximate spelling be used not only for the primary years but also for the duration of a child's school life.
