Inspire

Message From The Deputy Minister

Dr. Ben Levin Welcome to the first edition of Inspire: The Journal of Literacy and Numeracy for Ontario. Inspire is an online resource designed to share successful practices from Ontario's classrooms. Brought to you by Ontario's Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, this e-journal will allow you to read stories about actual challenges and achievements that our teachers and boards are experiencing and how they are helping to improve student achievement.

Under the leadership of Dr. Avis Glaze, our Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat is working closely with boards across the province to meet our ambitious but realistic targets. For example, our goal is to see 75 per cent of Ontario's 12-year-olds meet the provincial standard on province-wide reading, writing and math tests by 2008. Since a child's earliest years of education are crucial, we are also on track to implement a cap of 20 students in the primary grades by the 2007-08 school year. We have set the bar high, but our students deserve no less. You have entrusted us with significant financial resources and the education of your children. In return, you rightly deserve to expect results – results that show that Ontario's public education system is the very best that it can be. And that is exactly what we intend to deliver.

We believe the stories appearing in Inspire will help generate new innovations in literacy and numeracy, as teachers, principals and supervisory officers share their strategies for success and build news ones in the process. I encourage you to sign up for Inspire on the OPEN network, or to bookmark www.inspirelearning.ca and check in regularly. See how our commitment to help every child is becoming a reality.
