Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools General Information

Q. Where can I find information about how to access my Public Health unit or other community partners?

A. Links to lists of public health units and recreation departments are available. Other community partners may include local businesses, volunteer organizations or universities or colleges, depending on the school's healthy school priorties.

Q. How do the Healthy Schools initiatives connect with what is already being taught in the Health and Physical Education curriculum?

A. The health-related topics identified in the Foundations for a Healthy School chart are directly connected to the strands of the Health and Physical Education curriculum. This information is important for students to develop the knowledge and skills related to leading a healthy life. However, quality instruction and programs should only be considered one component of a more comprehensive healthy schools framework. There are also many curriculum areas that identify health-related topics or where health-related topics can be authentically integrated or connected with instruction.

Q. How can I build awareness and momentum about healthy schools in my school?

A. There are many creative ways to communicate with students, staff, parents and the community. Here are a few ideas:

  • provide updates at school council meetings
  • include articles in school newsletters and web pages
  • include information and updates in daily announcements
  • create bulletin board displays throughout the school showing photographs of students, staff and members of the community involved in healthy schools initiatives
  • hold assemblies with guest speakers.
