Healthy Schools
Foundations for a Healthy School
Generally, a healthy school has:
- quality instruction and programs,
- a healthy physical environment,
- a supportive social environment, and
- community partnerships.
Within this broad foundation, a variety of health-related topics need to be considered, including:
- healthy eating
- physical activity
- bullying prevention
- personal safety and injury prevention
- substance use and abuse
- healthy growth and development
- mental health
From providing healthy lunches and snacks, to hosting wellness programs, to school-wide bullying prevention — many schools and school boards are already leading the way when it comes to healthier schools. Our Foundations for a Healthy School chart (PDF, 69 KB) provides many examples from schools across the province that you may want to try at your school.
