School Year Calendar


2009-2010 to 2013-2014

  1. The following charts are provided for the guidance of school board officials in the preparation of school year calendars. School boards are required to prepare, adopt, and submit to the Ministry of Education, on or before May 1st of each year, the school year calendar(s) to be followed in the next school year.

  2. The school year calendars must be completed in accordance with the Education Act and Regulation 304, School Year Calendar, Professional Activity Days. Where a board wishes to adopt a school year calendar that is different from the requirements in section 2 of the regulation, the board shall submit the proposed school year calendar to the Ministry of Education for approval on or before March 1st of the preceding school year.

  3. The regular school year is the period between September 1 and June 30. The school year shall include a minimum of 194 school days of which two days must be designated as professional activity days that must be devoted to professional development activities related to specific provincial education priorities as outlined in Regulation 304. Boards may also designate up to four extra days as professional activity days. The remaining school days shall be instructional days. A board may designate up to 10 instructional days as examination days.
