Experiential Learning: Awards

Experiential Learning Employer Champion and Experiential Learning Ontario Excellence Awards

The Council for Experiential Learning: promoting school-work programs

The Council for Experiential Learning (CEL), formerly known as The Provincial Partnership Council, understands the value of experiential learning and fostering meaningful learning opportunities to help students succeed in the workplace of the future. Experiential learning opportunities can also help students better understand their strengths and build essential and transferable skills such as critical thinking, innovation and creativity, communication, and collaboration.

The Council for Experiential Learning (CEL) is a volunteer body with members from the private, public and voluntary sectors that aims to foster experiential learning (EL) connections through advising government and recognizing employers with the Experiential Learning Employer Champion awards and Experiential Learning Employer Excellence awards.

The council works towards these goals by:

  • promoting the value of experiential learning in partnership with employers, educators, students, parents, adult learners, and community-based organizations;
  • fostering community-connected experiential learning opportunities that are meaningful to students and adult learners and contribute to the development of skills, knowledge, and self-awareness necessary to succeed in the workplace of the future; and
  • providing feedback to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, and others as appropriate.

The activities of the council are supported by the Ministry of Education.

Recognizing Ontario employers

CEL provides awards to recognize employers making extraordinary contributions through their engagement with students. Recognizing our “champions” – successful employers – shines a spotlight for their efforts in the communities, while spurring other employers to get involved.

Thousands of employers across the province have been actively involved in shaping Ontario’s future workforce by providing students with the vital work experience and skills needed for a successful working life. The CEL awards are given for any of the following activities offered to students:

  • job shadowing
  • school-work transition programs
  • mentoring
  • classroom or worksite visits
  • career talks
  • cooperative education
  • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Specialist High Skill Major Program.

Experiential Learning Employer Champion Award

The award recognizes employers for providing students with rich and engaging experiential learning opportunities. Awards are given out annually. Nominations are accepted on an ongoing basis.
