Schools and School Boards

The following are the most recent facts and figures available for Ontario's publicly funded education system.

  • Administration: Ontario's schools are administered by district school boards and school authorities.
  • School boards are divided as follows:
    • 31 English Public
    • 29 English Catholic
    • 4 French Public
    • 8 French Catholic
  • There are 10 School Authorities, consisting of 4 geographically isolated boards and 6 hospital-based school authorities.
  • There is 1 Provincial Schools Authority.
  • As of 2018-2019, there were 3,948 elementary and 880 secondary schools in Ontario.

Education Funding

  • For 2018-2019, the government's total investment excluding capital was estimated to be $24.6 billion.
  • For 2018-2019, the government's total capital investment was estimated to be $1.93 billion.

Teachers, Administrators and Early Childhood Educators**

  • In 2018-2019, there were 128,091.95 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers and FTE long-term occasional (LTO) teachers, consisting of 85,399.08 elementary and 42,692.87 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and teachers in care and/or treatment, custody and correctional facilities.
    • There were 117,178.82 FTE teachers, consisting of 77,855.99 elementary and 39,322.83 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and LTO teachers.
    • There were 10,913.13 FTE LTO teachers, consisting of 7,543.09 elementary and 3,370.04 secondary LTO teachers.
  • In 2018-2019, there were 7,436.36 FTE administrators (principals and vice-principals), consisting of 5,452.67 elementary and 1,983.69 secondary administrators.
  • In 2018-2019, there were 9,158.12 FTE early childhood educators (ECE), excluding LTO ECEs.
  • In 2018-2019, there were 918.58 FTE LTO ECEs.
