Schools and School Boards

The following are the most recent facts and figures available for Ontario's publicly funded education system.

  • Administration: Ontario's schools are administered by district school boards and school authorities.

  • School Boards are divided as follows:


  • School authorities consist of geographically isolated boards and hospital school boards.
    • There are 11 School Authorities.

  • As of 2007-08 there were 4,026 elementary and 897 secondary schools in Ontario.

Education Funding

  • For 2008-09, the government's total investment in education was estimated to be $19.1 billion.
  • For 2009-10, the government's total investment is projected to be $19.8 billion.

Teachers and Administrators*

  • In 2007-08, there were 116,179.09 (FTE Full-Time Equivalent) teachers, consisting of 72,207.31 elementary and 43,971.78 secondary teachers.
  • In 2007-08, there were 7,368.16 administrators (principals and vice-principals) (FTE Full-Time Equivalent), consisting of 5,374.73 elementary and 1,993.43 secondary administrators.

Enrolment

  • As of 2007-08** the number of students in Ontario was: 2,087,588.
