Schools and School Boards

The following are the most recent facts and figures available for Ontario's publicly funded education system.

  • Administration: Ontario's schools are administered by district school boards and school authorities.
  • School boards are divided as follows:
    • 31 English Public
    • 29 English Catholic
    • 4 French Public
    • 8 French Catholic
  • There are 10 School Authorities, consisting of 4 geographically isolated boards and 6 hospital-based school authorities.
  • There is 1 Provincial Schools Authority.
  • As of 2016-2017, there were 3,975 elementary and 902 secondary schools in Ontario.

Education Funding

  • For 2016-17, the government's total investment excluding capital was estimated to be $22.9 billion.
  • For 2016-17, the government's total capital investment was estimated to be $1.35 billion.

Teachers, Administrators and Early Childhood Educators**

  • In 2016-2017, there were 124,135.04 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers and FTE long-term occasional (LTO) teachers, consisting of 82,134.51 elementary and 42,000.53 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and teachers in care and/or treatment, custody and correctional facilities.
    • There were 113,672.12 FTE teachers, consisting of 74,820.35 elementary and 38,851.77 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and LTO teachers.
    • There were 10,462.92 FTE LTO teachers, consisting of 7,314.16 elementary and 3,148.76 secondary LTO teachers.
  • In 2016-2017, there were 7,351.95 FTE administrators (principals and vice-principals), consisting of 5,362.03 elementary and 1,989.92 secondary administrators.
  • In 2016-2017, there were 9,020.44 FTE early childhood educators (ECE), excluding LTO ECEs.
  • In 2016-2017, there were 686.56 FTE LTO ECEs.

Enrolment

  • As of 2016-2017 the number of students in Ontario was: 2,006,700.
