Schools and School Boards

The following are the most recent facts and figures available for Ontario's publicly funded education system.

  • Administration: Ontario's schools are administered by district school boards and school authorities.
  • School boards are divided as follows:
    • 31 English Public
    • 29 English Catholic
    • 4 French Public
    • 8 French Catholic
  • There are 11 School Authorities, consisting of 4 geographically isolated boards, 6 hospital-based school authorities and the Provincial Schools Authority.
  • As of 2012-2013ǂ, there were 3,978 elementary and 913 secondary schools in Ontario*.

Education Funding

  • For 2012-13, the government's total investment excluding capital was $21 billion.
  • For 2012-13, the government's total capital investment was $1.4 billion.

Teachers, Administrators and Early Childhood Educators**

  • In 2012-2013ǂ, there were 115,492.53 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers, consisting of 73,031.92 elementary and 42,460.61 secondary teachers.
  • In 2012-2013ǂ, there were 7,326.91 FTE administrators (principals and vice-principals), consisting of 5,220.94 elementary and 2,105.97 secondary administrators.
  • In 2012-2013ǂ, there were 4,390.45 FTE early childhood educators.

Enrolment

  • As of 2012-13ǂ* the number of students in Ontario was: 2,031,205.
