Unregistered Private Career College Shut Down

Bestech Academy In Violation Of Private Career Colleges Act

December 12, 2008

An unregistered private career college based in southwestern Ontario has been shut down after violating the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.

Bestech Academy cannot operate as a private career college in Ontario. It cannot deliver vocational programs or solicit or accept applications from students.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities' Superintendent of Private Career Colleges ordered Bestech to cease operation in October 2008. The Superintendent refused to register Bestech as a private career college based on its inability to meet the requirements of the Act.

To operate in Ontario, private career colleges must be registered and have their programs approved by the ministry under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005. This Act ensures that the colleges meet certain standards for the programs they offer, as well as for their advertising, refund policies, and instructor qualifications.

During inspections in August 2008, ministry staff confirmed the academy was operating as an unregistered private career college offering unapproved programs at campuses in Stoney Creek and St. Catharines, Ontario.

A complete listing of the orders issued to Bestech Academy is available on the ministry's Notices and Orders website. Students can use the ministry's online search service to find registered private career colleges and approved programs in Ontario.
