News ReleaseLa Cité Collégiale Set To ExpandMcGuinty Government Helps More Students Train For High-Demand Skilled Construction JobsAugust 26, 2008 Ontario is helping La Cité collégiale expand so more students can train for jobs in high-demand skilled trades. La Cité collégiale will build a new Research and Training Centre in the Construction Trades in Orléans, in Ottawa's east end, with the help of a $6.75-million provincial investment. This funding builds on Ontario's commitment to ensure enough trained skilled trades workers are available to keep our economy moving forward. It also is part of our plan to ensure high-quality postsecondary education is available to Ontario's Francophone community. The centre will allow La Cité collégiale to almost triple its apprenticeship program to include training in 18 high-demand construction trades. La Cité collégiale will now be able to offer new programs in areas ranging from residential air conditioning systems mechanics and plumbing to renewable energy and green building technologies. The new centre will open in September 2010, adding 40,000 square feet of learning space and helping La Cité collégiale welcome more than 750 additional students in construction trades programs by 2013-2014. This funding is part of the government's three-year, $1.5-billion Skills to Jobs Action Plan. Quotes"We're investing in the skills and knowledge of our people so they can work in high-paying, skilled jobs that will strengthen our economy and improve everyone's quality of life," said Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy.
"This investment will give Franco-Ontarians better access to high-demand skilled construction jobs thus ensuring them greater employment opportunities for the benefit of the francophone community and of all Ontarians," said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs. "This new campus of La Cité collégiale is great news for our students and for the entire community of Orléans," said Ottawa-Orléans MPP Phil McNeely. "More training and educational opportunities in Orléans will mean more jobs and more prosperity for our community." "La Cité collégiale is very pleased with this major investment that will provide Franco-Ontarians with renewed learning opportunities in the high demand construction trades sector. While supporting the government's Skills to Jobs Action Plan, this important initiative also supports the development of Ontario's Francophone community, the economic development of Eastern Ontario, of the City of Ottawa and of Orléans," said Andrée Lortie, La Cité collégiale's president.
