More than 4,600 new student spaces to be created in eastern Ontario through SuperBuild

KINGSTON – (February 23, 2000)  The largest capital investment in Ontario's colleges and universities in more than 30 years will help ensure that every willing and qualified student has access to a postsecondary education, Dianne Cunningham, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities announced today.

Making the announcement at Queen's University, Cunningham said, "I am also pleased to announce that Queen's University and Sir Sandford Fleming College's share of this investment will be more than $78 million to create over 4,600 new student spaces."

Sir Sandford Fleming's award will allow the college to expand enrolment at its campuses in Peterborough, Haliburton and Lindsay. Queen's University had two successful SuperBuild proposals, one to build a new chemistry building and the other to build an Integrated Learning Centre.

"SuperBuild investments will help revitalize our colleges and universities so that Ontario students receive the high-quality education they deserve. This is much more than an announcement about bricks and mortar; it is an investment in Ontario's future," Cunningham added.

Through SuperBuild, the Ontario Government is spending $742 million this year to build and modernize universities and colleges for future demand, with $660 million of this going towards new capital projects. The remainder will be used for renewal of existing facilities and the completion of previously approved projects. Investment from public and private sector partners will bring the total value of the investment to nearly $1.4 billion.

SuperBuild was first announced in the 1999 Ontario Budget and will consolidate all of Ontario's infrastructure spending under one program to ensure that the province's priorities are met. The inititiative will inject $20 billion into Ontario's infrastructure over the next five years, half of which will come from the government's partners in the public and private sectors. In the first year, the Province will invest $2.9 billion in Ontario's infrastructure.
