This report provides an overview of progress made on the Ministry of Education's Aboriginal Education Strategy since 2007.
The report includes Ontario's first baseline data on First Nation, Métis and Inuit student achievement based on voluntary, confidential Aboriginal student self-identification.
It also highlights key priorities for the ministry, successes to date, plus next steps for advancing the goals of Ontario's Aboriginal Education Strategy.
While many Aboriginal students are excelling academically, the report reveals an achievement gap between Aboriginal students and all students.
The report underscores the importance of accurate and reliable data to support Aboriginal students attending provincially funded elementary and secondary schools.
The baseline data will help the Ontario government work in partnership with school boards and First Nation, Métis and Inuit partners to continue to refine strategies and develop new initiatives to help Aboriginal students reach their full potential.
