Care for children attending elementary school

Many child care centres offer programs specifically for children who are between 4 and 12 years old. Programs operate at different times, such as:

  • before and after regular school hours
  • at lunch
  • during school breaks
  • on days when schools are closed.

Where there is sufficient interest from parents, schools that offer full-day kindergarten also offer before- and after-school programs to provide children with more opportunities to learn and grow. These play-based programs complement the program offered during the regular school day.

The program includes a mix of exploration, guided and independent activities, quiet times and outdoor play. School boards may offer the before- and after-school programs directly, or they may choose to enter into agreements with third-party providers that are licensed to offer child care programs to offer the programs on the school site.
