Getting Organized for School: Establishing Routines

Transcript of video

Female: Life is hectic, and there are lots of distractions.  As parents, we need to help our children manage their learning by encouraging them to develop effective organizational skills.  Sometimes it's as simple as having an accessible place to store school supplies, so our kids know where to find the things they need to complete their homework.  At other times, we might need to work together to come up with a consistent nightly routine for the packing of school bags so that completed homework, lunches and snacks successfully arrive at school each and every day.  And it's particularly important to follow through with routines such as signing a daily agenda to ensure that all homework and tasks are completed.

Father: Okay, buddy, I think it's time for you to get your homework, okay? You know what to get for your homework?

Thomas: Yeah.

Father: Okay, let's see what the agenda says.  Okay.  Is there anything else that I need to be able to look at today, Thomas?

Thomas: Yes.

Father: Yeah, no? What's your homework?

Thomas: We have to do a story.

Father: Okay, what's your story going to be about?

Thomas: (Inaudible)

Father: Okay.  Okay. Okay, you got all your homework done?

Thomas: Yeah.

Father: Okay, you know what to do.  Good work, buddy. Thomas, ready to go?

Thomas: Almost.

Male: Thomas is able to leave promptly for school because he completed his homework and organized his school bag and lunch the night before.  Having a homework routine, a designated accessible place for school supplies, and a routine to check for completion, allowed Thomas to leave for school calmly and efficiently in the morning.
