Becoming a Parent Representative on your School Council
Joining a school council helps you get involved in your child’s education and the life of a school. School councils offer schools and families an opportunity to work together on important issues that affect the school and community. They are intended to help improve student learning and achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.
All schools in Ontario are required to have a school council. Membership includes parents, school staff and community representatives, as well as the principal and/or vice principal. The majority of council members are parents of students enrolled at the school. The membership of the school council should reflect the diversity of its school community.
School councils advise the principal on various issues, including student learning and achievement, the school’s code of behaviour, extra curricular activities and any new education initiatives at the school.
