The Importance of Literacy and Numeracy
A solid foundation in literacy and numeracy gives students a wide range of choices in school and beyond. In 2004, the Ontario government created the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat (LNS) to support the learning of elementary students in reading, writing and mathematics.
Secretariat staff work directly with schools and boards to identify challenges and develop solutions to address them.
Some examples of their work with boards and schools include:
- Working with school boards to develop goals and action plans for improving student learning and achievement
- Sharing research on effective teaching practices with schools
- Supporting on-going professional learning for teachers.
